Treatment for Sore Throat | Relief for Sore Throat

What is Sore Throat:

Sore throat (pharyngitis) is very common. It is usually caused by an infection in the throat. Soreness in the throat may be the only symptom. In addition, you may also have a hoarse voice, mild cough, fever, headache, feel sick, feel tired, and the glands in your neck may swell. It may be painful to swallow. The soreness typically gets worse over 2-3 days and then usually gradually goes within a week.

The disease is most commonly seen in children and young people but it can occur at any age. The characteristics of the symptom are throat pain and trouble swallowing. If the sore throat is due to bacterial infection it can be treated with antibiotics. Usually there are no complications.

Causes of Sore Throat:

A sore throat is one of the most common reasons a scratchy, burning, painful throat can have a variety of causes. They include viruses, bacteria, voice straining, ingesting hot or irritating foods, dry air or smoking. Some health problems, such as reflux, tumors, allergies, chronic coughing or throat surgery can also cause a sore throat.

Symptoms of Sore Throat:

• Swollen tonsils (two small glands found at the back of your throat, behind the tongue)

• Enlarged and tender glands in your neck

• A painful, tender feeling at the back of your throat

• Discomfort when swallowing

• A high temperature (fever) of 38C (100.4F) or over

• Aching muscles

• A headache

• Tiredness

• A cough

• A runny nose

Sore Throat Remedies:

1. Gargle at least once each hour with 1 tsp (5 g) of salt dissolved in 8 fl oz (240 mL) of warm water.

2. Steep 1 teaspoon dried chamomile in 1 cup of hot water. Strain. Let it cool to lukewarm and gargle as needed.

3. Add a spoonful of bourbon or whiskey to a large glass of warm water and gargle can help numb a sore throat.

4. Mix ¼ cup of apple cider vinegar and ¼ cup of honey. Take one tablespoon every four hours or as needed for pain relief.

5. Boil a pint of water and add ½ teaspoon of powdered goldenseal root. Drink hot. Goldenseal is well known for its antibiotic properties.

6. Add the juice of one lemon and one teaspoon of salt to one cup of warm water. Gargle three times a day for one minute.

7. Boil some pomegranate rinds and drink as a tea. The pomegranate contains astringents.

8. Sucking on a hard candy will stimulate saliva production, which will help moisten your dry, irritated throat.

9. Mix 1 tsp. lime juice and 1 Tbls. honey. Swallow tiny amounts slowly 2-3 times a day.

10. Drink marjoram tea with a little lemon and honey to relieve throat pain and reduce coughing.

Sore Throat Prevention:

* Drink enough fluids to prevent dehydration.

* Wash your hands often, especially when you are around people who are sick.

* Identify and avoid irritants, such as smoke, fumes, or yelling, that cause a sore throat.

* Do not smoke or use other tobacco products and avoid exposure to secondhand smoke.
